Nominate someone for an EDNA

Hi Everyone,

Have you considered the nomination of someone you admire for an EDNA Award? Now is the time to collect the necessary information in order to meet the closing date of 16 April. Remember the EDNAs are the only awards that recognise feminist activists who support other women. We’re sure you know someone like that.

THE EDNA RYAN AWARDS

The EDNA Awards (The EDNAs), inaugurated in 1998 by the Women’s Electoral Lobby NSW (WEL NSW), were developed to recognise the life and passion of Edna Ryan (1904-1997) who worked tirelessly to make a better world –especially for women. The Awards have two aims: to provide the opportunity to nominate those who we feel should be acknowledged and to provide an occasion to come together to celebrate what we do.

The EDNAs are awards made to women who have made a feminist difference. Those whose activity advances the status of women: the troublemakers, the stirrers, the battlers, who show extraordinary commitment and determination.

There are 10 Award categories: Workforce, Government, Arts, Community Activism, Media /Communication, Humour, Mentoring, Battling, Education and The Grand Stirrer.

Criteria for Awards.

The EDNAs are not awards for long service, or only for those who are well-known. Nor are they simply a recognition of women who are successful in their own field.

In considering the nominations, an independent panel will seek specific evidence of the nominee's achievements or actions which have –

(1) fostered or offered opportunities for women to clarify and/or fulfil their goals, or

(2) raised or discussed in the public arena issues and perspectives of particular interest to women, which are often otherwise marginalised or denigrated.

Nominees must be comfortable with being called feminist, and must live and work in NSW or the ACT. These are the places where Edna lived and worked, and the geographic limits help to avoid potential difficulties in managing the review process. Details on all women awarded an EDNA are deposited with the NSW State Library, and are made available to the public.

Nominate a person you admire. Nominations must be on the nomination form (attached) and must meet the criteria. Closing date for nominations is 16 April 2010.

The Edna Ryan Awards night will be held on 14 May 2010 at the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts .Come along and join us to celebrate some of our achievements, and to encourage all of us (as Edna did) to keep on contributing, to keep on making a feminist difference.

Nomination forms and booking forms are attached for your information. Further details are available on the WEL NSW website: www.welnsw.org.au or by contacting the WEL office: 66 Albion St Surry Hills .Phone/fax: 9212 4374.Email: welnsw@comcen.com.au

Are you a future leader in the Grain Industry

MEDIA RELEASE

16 March 2010

Mentors needed: Australia’s future grain leaders want you

GGA is looking for established leaders in Australian agriculture to mentor participants in its second Australian Future Grain Leaders Program.

‘MentorMatch’ was nominated as a key success element in the inaugural Program where 15 participants were matched with established leaders to support them with their leadership goals.

Mentor, Murray Rogers AM, an executive in the Australian grains and food sectors as well as past CEO of AWB Limited, enjoyed being a mentor in the program and says it provided him with an insight into today’s emerging leaders as well as an avenue to share his knowledge and skills for the benefit of others.

“It is terrific to have had the opportunity to support leadership development through structured mentoring. Working one on one over a short time resulted in real actions for my mentoree James and new learnings for me as well. It was a two way partnership,” Mr Rogers said

James Hamilton, a grain grower from Narromine, New South Wales says he got much more than he expected in his mentoring partnership with Mr Rogers.

“It exceeded my expectations, I now have the competence and confidence to set my own direction and goals and then pursue them with passion,” said James.

Mentors provide two hours of one-on-one phone support to emerging leaders in the Australian grains industry during April and May.

The idea of MentorMatch is that each Program participant is matched with an established leader to support them in their skills development as well as provide insights into how to lead change in the real world and importantly how to trouble shoot when things don't go quite to plan.

Interested mentors do not need to be from the grains industry and leadership experience from a wide range of sectors is encouraged.

MentorMatch is coordinated by RuralScope Pty Limited who will provide resources and support to mentors.

GGA Chairman John Eastburn said it was testimony to the program that MentorMatch was bridging the gap between established and emerging leaders.

“The Australian Future Grain Leaders Program develops quality leaders with the knowledge and skills to meet the demands of future industry challenges.

“The mentoring process provides a great opportunity for experienced leaders to give something back and support the next generation of leaders in Australian agriculture,” Mr Eastburn said.

There are currently 15 participants in the Australian Future Grain Leaders Program who are highly motivated and working towards completing their integrated industry project where they apply their leadership skills and knowledge in action.

Projects being undertaken include delivering a farm leasing program, investigating fuel hedging, developing a nationally consistent definition of Australian quality assured grain, establishing a rural youth conference, increasing pulse production in southern Australia as well as creating a positive communication link between researchers and farmers regarding grain storage.

Mentors are assured that any support, advice and insights provided to Program participants will be well utilised.

For more information on current participants and MentorMatch visit the Mentors page on www.grainleaders.com.au

To register your interest as a mentor or for more information, please contact Jo Eady at RuralScope Pty Ltd on 0419 912 879 or email jo@ruralscope.com

Youth Off the Streets Scholarship Program Open Now

Youth Off The Streets Scholarship Program Nominations Open Now

Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets is calling for nominations for its annual National Scholarship Program, now in it’s eighth year.

The Scholarship program provides financial and personal support for young people to pursue their vocational goals in any field.

“Perhaps the greatest thing I’ve gained through the scholarship is the knowledge that someone thinks I have potential, and that I’m good enough for ongoing support. Feeling this means more to me than anything,” A 2005 Scholarship Recipient, who has since completed the program, said.

Nominations are open for people between 14 and 21 years of age, who are disadvantaged and/or disconnected from their families or communities. Since 2004, The Scholarship Program has supported over 80 talented young people, from all over Australia.

“The aim of the Scholarship Program is to support young people who have a genuine desire to move forward but face significant financial and personal barriers which make their everyday goals a struggle. We want to give all young people an equal chance in life,” said Father Chris Riley, Founder and CEO of Youth Off The Streets.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of young people accessing high level tertiary education continues to grow. However, for young people forced to meet immediate challenges to survive, vocational training rarely an option. This lays the foundation to further widen the social and economic gap across Australia for generations to come, continuing the cycle of privilege and disadvantage.

Nominations for the 2010 Scholarship program can be made by young people themselves, or on their behalf.

To lodge a nomination and help a young person from your local area realise their potential, visit the Youth Off The Streets website at www.youthoffthestreets.com.au to download a nomination form.

Nominations close 5pm, Friday 7 May 2010.

If you would like more information on nominations or sponsorship for the Scholarship Program please contact Youth Off The Streets.

GREAT GRANT OPPORTUNITY

Small Grants for Small Rural Communities Program
Current Round: yes

A small grants program for small rural Australian communities will offer about $900,000 a year in grants to benefit people in rural and remote communities. This collaborative approach is designed to:
· Make better, targeted use of funds improving access for rural & regional communities
· Provide a simpler application process
· Enhance efficiency and effectiveness for philanthropic trusts and foundations who wish to support small communities
What can be funded?
· Not-for-profit Organisations can apply for projects and activities that offer clear public benefit for communities living in small rural and remote locations in Australia, contributing to their development in social and community welfare, economic, environmental, health, education or cultural areas.
· Applications from communities with a population of 10,000 or less will receive priority.
· Grants will be made in amounts up to $5,000.
· To be eligible, projects must be for a charitable purpose (benefit the whole community). The majority of funds are unrestricted but, as this is a collaborative program, there are some grants that are restricted to Tax Concession Charity (TCC) organisations or must be granted in Victoria; the Benalla region (Victoria) or the Far North Queensland region.
· Organisations should have an ABN or Incorporation Certificate.
· Organisations demonstrating community partnerships will be preferred to multiple applications from one community.
